In the semicircular or box gutter, single heating conductor loops or self regulating heating tape can be installed in distance up to 20cm. Wider spouts, roof valleys and gutters required repeated placement of the heating tapes or capacity of approximately 200W/m2. As the heating power is only required in case snow or meltwater, to ensure the best functionality, it is crucial to install temperature and humidity-depend control devices.

Advantages of gutter heating systems
Accumulated snow can be a reason of dangerous roof-avalanches. Mechanical snow removal, often causes damages to the roof structure, lightening protection system or other roof installations. Removing the snow from the roofs by professionals can generate huge additional costs.
Electrical heating systems are so far the most effective way of protecting roofs from unfavorable winter conditions and can be installed on almost all type of roofs. They prevent icing and snow load occurring, protect roofs and facades from freezing rain and damages caused by melted water.
For the heating of roof surface ( roof overhangs or cold zones), we always recommend the use of DEFROMAT heating mats.
The heating pipelines are fastened in a meandering pattern by plastic webs and tied off with cable ties. The heating mats themselves are fastened to a galvanized steel supporting cable or stainless steel cable. The cable on the other hand is fastened on the seam of the tin roof via standing seam clamps or on cable carriers to be mounted below the roof slab on the battens.

For water supply systems, fire pipes, pipelines responsible for keeping the liquids at requested temperature or tanks dedicated to high viscosity fluids, it is crucial to protect them from low temperatures, frost or unfavorable weather conditions and/or to keep them at proper temperature point. For energy saving reasons and right performance, heated pipes and containers should be also thermally insulated. To achieve best protection, electric heating systems are currently the only practical and most economical technology.

The right technology
The required heating capacity depends on the nominal pipe size, installation thickness and temperature difference between the pipe wall and surrounding area and it should be precisely calculated and dimensioned.
Installation by DEFROMAT
The pipe heating installation should always be carried by a qualified electrician, pipeline constructor or insulator. However, for big and technically complicated projects and demanding construction we stay at your disposal, ready to advise and help.
Heating of the pipelines can be divided into following applications
Mainly heating according to DIN VDE 0253 and the so-called self-regulatory heating tapes have proven to be effective in practice as a heating elements for electrical trace heatings. The resistance value of heating pipelines according to DIN 0253 with a heating conductor made of high-quality resistance wires and a plastic insulation have to be precisely adjusted to the supply voltage for certain lengths and heating capacities. DEFROMAT has a wide range of resistances of such heating pipelines in silicone / PVC and Teflon in stock and determines the heating capacity. With those it is possible to cover most of the applications in housing technology.
Thanks to positive features, the usage of self regulating heating tapes last years has significantly increased.
They can be flexibly used and because of self-limiting effect, adapted to the respective temperature. Protection against overheating and accuracy of cutting to length are further advantages.
Self-regulating heating tapes by DEFROMAT, are available in capacity range 10W/m to 60W/m. The self regulating effect makes it possible to design the thermo-technical system bit more generously.
Because of lower (comparing to self regulating heating tape) load capacity, to get a connection at feed point, conventional heating cable (DIN 0253) must be laid as a loop twice, parallel to the pipe. In case of self regulating tape, only parallel installation is required.
Increasing of heating power can be achieved in both cases, by double or multiple, parallel lying or by winding.
The heating cables and self-regulating tapes, must be fastened by special adhesive tapes or aluminium tape at a distance of approx. 30 cm. before laying the insulation. Resignation from thermal is insulation is possible or useful only in certain cases.
Due to the fact that even self-regulatory heating tapes do not switch off, but only reduce their heating output, it is for the most applications recommended to have a temperature control and/ or limitation for reasons of economic efficiency. The temperature sensor is usually applied on the heated pipe in order to detect the actual conditions and the effect of the heating output. A control via the outside temperature is suitable only in special cases and only in special cases it is possible to dispense with a control (when hot water pipes are heated).
The controller can be mounted on site as a surface- mounted version and can directly switch the heating output or may be accommodated in a control distribution together with the switchgear assemblies and protective gear.
Self regulating heating types:
A = KA 2X, 10 W/m at 5°C
B = KB 2X, 25 W/m at 5°C
- = not economical, choose stronger insulation or apply longer heating tape by winding
□ = required insulation strength according to the heating system ordinance
The exact dependance between the thermal engineering task and the required heating capacity for the given system specifications ( nominal pipe diameter, insulation thickness) are described in details in the DEFROMAT's pipe heating system description.
Frost protection can be applied according to the table below. Assumption: pipe holding temperature +5°C, lowest ambient temperature -25°C, laid simply straight on the pipe.
